Atollo di Vaavu (Thinadoo)

Good To Know

Good To Know

The Vaavu Atoll is the least populated in the Maldives, with fewer than 2,500 inhabitants and six inhabited islands. It comprises two geographical atolls: Vaavu (Felidhe Atoll) and Vattaru, a small circular atoll with a single island occupied by a telecommunications repeater.

Perfect for those seeking peace and authenticity, Vaavu is renowned for its uncrowded beaches and spectacular diving. Its channels offer some of the best dives in the Maldives, with blacktip reef sharks, nurse sharks, rays, manta rays (from May to June), and schools of barracuda. Some of the most famous dive sites include:

  • Fotteyo Kandu, with caves and walls covered in colorful corals.
  • Miyaru Kandu ("Shark Channel"), home to grey reef sharks and tuna.
  • The Alimatha Pier, known for spectacular night dives with nurse sharks and rays.

How to reach it: The Vaavu Atoll is located about 80 km south of Malé and can be reached in two main ways:

  • Speedboat: The transfer by speedboat takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and is the most common method, with daily departures from Malé and Velana International Airport.
  • Seaplane: For a faster and more scenic journey, you can opt for a seaplane flight (about 25 minutes), available on request through resorts or local operators.
  • Some less touristy islands may require additional transfers by local boat (dhoni) or private speedboat organized by the resort or guesthouse.
