What You Need to Know

Shaviyani Atoll, also known as North Miladhunmadulu, is located in the northern part of the archipelago and consists of 51 islands, of which only 16 are inhabited. Due to its limited development, Shaviyani Atoll retains spectacular and unspoiled landscapes, perfect for those seeking an authentic experience in touch with nature. Its white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons, and coral reefs teeming with marine life make it an ideal destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The capital is the island of Funadhoo, located about 220 km from the capital Malé. With fewer than 2,500 inhabitants, Funadhoo is a peaceful center that has seen significant growth in recent decades, especially with the opening of its domestic airport, improving connections with the rest of the country. Until 1997, the island was uninhabited, but the need to preserve the water resources of nearby Makunudhoo led to its urbanization. In addition to its extraordinary natural beauty, Shaviyani Atoll also holds cultural treasures, such as the historic Kanditheemu Mosque, which houses the oldest example of Thaana script, a traditional Maldivian writing system dating back to the late 16th century. The atoll is also renowned as a natural sanctuary for sea turtles, which find an ideal environment for nesting here. Wildlife enthusiasts can admire these magnificent creatures as they swim in the crystal-clear waters or lay their eggs on the protected beaches.

How to reach it: Shaviyani Atoll is located about 270 km north of Malé and can be reached by a scenic seaplane flight lasting approximately 55 minutes.
